FOOTSCRAY YARRAVILLE BRASS ACADEMY
Established in 2025, Footscray Yarraville Brass Academy (FYBA) is a welcoming, non-competitive brass music group dedicated to learning and enjoyment.
Footscray Yarraville Brass Academy is Melbourne’s newest and most exciting program for brass players.
Every week during school terms, we bring together the next generation of brass and percussion musicians to rehearse, learn, and perform in a dynamic brass band setting. Young (and more experienced) musicians join us from beginner level and can progress through a structured pathway that develops their skills, confidence, and musicality, all the way to performing with the renowned Footscray Yarraville City Band.
As part of one of Australia’s leading A Grade brass band organisaitons - with a history spanning over 150 years - our Academy offers players the chance to learn from experienced brass musicians in an encouraging, challenging, and inspiring environment. Our goal is simple: to nurture technical excellence, performance confidence, and above all, a lifelong love of music-making.
We welcome students from all backgrounds — no one is excluded due to disadvantage. Music has the power to unite, and in the Footscray Yarraville Brass Academy, you will join a diverse community of musicians who share your passion, energy, and commitment to excellence.
If you’ve ever wanted to be part of a brass band, perform in concerts and competitions, and develop your musicianship alongside great friends, the Academy is your place to start.

FYBA is suitable for:
Student beginners who have never played before
Adult beginners (who might be returning to music, playing a different instrument - or who have never played before)
Experienced players looking to increase their skills in a low stress environment
Open to anyone new to music or brass instruments, as well as players eager to try a different instrument, FYBA focuses on building musicianship and ensemble skills in a friendly and supportive environment.
Guided by experienced tutors including MSO and OV musicians and the organisation's top-grade players, members receive high-quality instruction that prioritises music education alongside the joy of making music together. Rehearsals are held on Sunday afternoons in Maribyrnong. There are no auditions or prior experience needed to join the ensemble - and in many cases we have instruments available to use.
